Sorry, folks…still busy. Work pouring in (billable hours are a good thing), plus some minor surgery this week (ow, but recovering). I’ll try to think of something clever and timely for next week. Meanwhile, be good to yourselves and the people around you.

This process can be exhausting or rewarding, depending on how patient you are, but it likely will require most or all of your technical communication skills, from audience analysis to careful attention to word choice and editing. I’ve been talking with a couple people recently about vacationing. I recently got back from a Disney cruise, and the experience left me feeling like I’d missed something. I had a similar experience when I got back from Australia and New Zealand, which was a package tour through Trafalgar. The countries were fine, but what I craved from the experiences was a bit more autonomy, which I’d experienced on a trip in 2009. This got me to thinking about autonomy at work…so yes, I’ll be talking about vacations today, but also about how we function in the workplace. Continue reading
This week a colleague asked for opinions about a prominent program in my industry. I realized almost immediately that I shouldn’t share my opinions in a public forum, and so responded via a private channel instead. Why? Am I being coy or hiding my insights? Not quite. It’s more accurate to say that it was a lot easier to share my blunt, unvarnished opinions when I was not working professionally in the industry of my choice. Continue reading
Recently a friend invited me to the Sebring International Raceway, where his brother was driving his Porsche GT4 at a high performance driver education event. Basically, instead of a race, the track was allowing people with sports cars to drive around the track at whatever speed they felt comfortable driving, but within strict safety rules and without racing each other. This was an opportunity for me to ride in a fast car on a track with a lot of hairpin turns. Not being much of a speed demon, the question was: would I? Continue reading
